These Three Things....
Three things this game needs more than anything else :
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
1.) More open and varied PvP. (i.e. districted areas where open PvP is allowed alongside of PvE is something I would highly encourage.)
It also needs more varied organized PvP in the forms of 1v1 arenas and organized team matches between two parties that want to match up specifically (without a GvG requirement). (Obviously, there would not be XP rewards, etc. for these organized matches)
2.) Another thing this game needs more than anything else is customization that can be seen/viewed by other people. Be it guildies or the generic user, I think it is safe to say we all desire that. (The high end armor is a prime example of how true this is...) Houses, Guild Hall Customization, and suggestions of the like are great examples of this.
3.) Gold Sinks. for one one great solution : see above #2. For others, they could admit the heavy inflation at the high end of the game and give out x8 gold for the highest level areas (x8 is an example of how bad it is).
I think it's safe to say the majority of us desire these kinds of changes.
I could go on about more armor art variations, etc., but I think Anet is working on that stuff anyways. I thing these other three things are vital to the long lasting enjoyment of this game by everyone.

Not number 1. I never want to see "open PvP". Ever.

I'm not suggesting in all zones or outposts. I'm just saying have an area or two for those of us that DO like Open PvP.

It's really interesting to me that some people hate open pvp so much that they don't want anybody else to be able to do it...
Would you be opposed to a new Open PVP arena that you never have to go to?

We could start a huge argument over the merits of open PvP. The truth is : A lot of people love it.
A lot of people hate it.
But, as long as it's optional, I feel it's almost inexcusable in a game with otherwise great PvP NOT to have it.

and what do we do while waiting for the next one? PvP mainly.
As for the talk of a gankfest? Only to those that enter an open PvP area would this be an subject of worry.
There are plenty of PvE areas for carebear activity. I would love a more open format area for PvE/PvP combination activites. It would be more of a challenge and a lot more fun. (how do you solve the problem of being ganked in a gankfest? Simple : you do the ganking yourself)

Open PvP? Might suck, you go buy dye or something and theres angry mobs pounded you to death, and you respawn they wait for you and pound you again until you leave the area, and you'll be saying "WTF i do, i was just buying dye"

I'm thinking more along the lines of a zone with mobs and maybe a merchant and storage agent? (just District it like the towns)

You misunderstand.
What he means by "open pvp" is that 1 specific zone (IE: Another Arena) has a whole bunch of characters in it, just like any other town, but these characters would be able to FIGHT eachother.
While it sounds great at first, I'm sure what we'd see is some awesome guild (Like the Fianna! [No, I'm not a member ]) be able to just hang out there for a few hours, and whenever someone would zone, they'd be blown into tiny pieces.
How could we change that?
Like this:
Every hour on the hour, a new "Round" would start. These rounds would last 1/2 an hour. After that, the zone would return to normal, with players bieng incapable of joining at that time.
By having multiple districts, you could make it so that a new "round" started every 15 minutes.
But screw massive PvP. You know what I want?
MASSIVE PvE.
I'm talking like a thousand charr vs 150 toons.
There would be NOTHING cooler then wading out into a huge group of Charr and ripping them limb from limb.
How would it work?
Every hour, a new round starts, as stated above. Round lasts a half hour, and every minute another 100 mobs (lets say charr) spawn outside the defensive barricade (in this case, lets say an Ascalon City outpost/castle). The monsters would charge the gate a la Lord of the Rings (The second movie, not the third), and the players would have to hold them off.
But how would monks keep track of who to heal?
Divide the 150 into smaller groups of 10 (not 8). The groups would be formed like this:
Upon entering the district, you either create your own group, or hit the "Automatic Group" button.
Upon hitting the automatic group button, a small window would pop up with two boxes, with one asking you to select your class combo (lets say N/W) and your function (Here, a menu would scroll down, and you would select one of the general types. Since this character is a N/W, he would be given such choices as Tank, Interupter, Summoner, Hexes, Degen, and so forth). You are then automatically invited into a group that requires your build type.
What do you think?

Alright, anyhow... while waiting for the next one... i would say play the pvp... just untill the next open area for pve comes out (should be huge, and challenging, as from word of mouth).
Gankfest... heh, it would be more then a gank fest... i'm imagining this place where you can create a team and go out into the "death zone"... and i see this guild with a team of rangers using every trap in the book... i could really see it now... (Run out), (Fall down from spike trap + cripple + flames + bleeding + blinded), even if you don't die instantly from a full team placing tons of traps... you still can't fight in that...
But, for those that would like some more "open" type pvp... i would suggest more of an area like the "random pvp" area we have now... you press the enter mission, and get placed into a map with say... 8-16 other random people... and duke it out... that's about the most "open" thing i can see getting placed into a highly balanced team game...

Here's more of what I was envisioning :
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Imagine a zone the size of something like Snake Dance or Lornar's. (Pretty big)
It has monsters in it, and maybe even a quest or two (a couple collecters, etc.)
You enter it via the exit of an outpost (like we do now) with a party if you wish.
However, it is districted like the outposts and towns are. Other people can enter it as well. If you worry about entrance ganking, you can always make it to where you have to talk to someone or use a teleporter to enter it and have it randomly drop the party somewhere in the zone. Defeated parties could be routed back to the starting outpost or to one of multiple rez points (randomly selected and placed) (or just have it randomly drop the party somewhere outside the range of mobs).
When changing districts in this zone, have the whole party change. Of course, there is PvP between the different parties. To cut down on lag they might need to limit the number of parties/people in each district.
That's the kind of scenario I'm envisioning here. Make the quests or collectors items stuff that would be desirable, but not vital. That way it's not absolutely necessary for pure PvEers to expose themselves to "random ganking".
Sure, there's always the possibility of a guild taking over a zone to gank people in. However, you could just change districts. Remember, it's not like they would get any XP from ganking you or anything. It's just a more anarchy style zone.
(btw, this type of zone would be fun as non PvP, too. I think non-PvP and PvP zones of this nature would be great for increasing the social interaction of the game.)
That's the kind of thing I'm envisioning when I talk about Open PvP/PvE.
